Mountain Standard Time 6 is officially over. The last few artists stumbled away on Sunday afternoon. Thanks to everyone who sent in tips, and everyone who put up with me standing a bit too close to them, scribbling in my notebook. To commemorate, here are a few good parting clean-up shots.

WORK FROM NOWHERE WORK FOR NO ONE at Pith Gallery

After Stride, the crowd trickled over to Pith Gallery on 9th Ave SE, where Wednesday Lupypciw was showing WORK FROM NOWHERE WORK FOR NO ONE.

Downstairs in the gallery, viewers watched three loops of Lupypciw dowsing her loom with gasoline then lighting it on fire. Two projections showed the scene from wide angles, while a large television on the floor crackled with a close-up of the flames.

Upstairs the last party of the festival was raucous and crowded. Two DJs spun at the top of the stairs. A room labelled “Lupypciw Family Denim” held a tiny tv dripping with honey. The two bartenders appeared to be located in a closet.

At the end of the night, artists who couldn’t get enough headed to the HiFi Club. Sources say Eduardo Oramas was seen stumbling home at nearly 4am.

After Nahed Mansour & Bojana Videkanic‘s final performance on Friday afternoon, festival supporters met downtown at Royal Canadian Legion #1. Art Club, explained Rita McKeough, meets there every Friday evening at the Legion. Over pints, Tomas Jonsson, McKeough, and M:ST board members Renato Vitic and Sonia Edworthy debriefed on the successes and failures of the 6th biannual festival.

Vitic expressed disappointment at the dearth of nudity, but reported that the floor of Truck is still sticky and will probably take weeks to clean. (Vitic was referring to TouVA Offspring Christina Mayder‘s honey-drenched performance.)

Jonsson remarked that, barring the situation in Lethbridge, there were surprisingly few injuries. Other topics ranged from visiting artist programs (at ACAD & the UofC) to lightbulb jokes, and of course, as is ubiquitous among artist-run types, real estate and property rentals.

A: I don’t know, I left.” — McKeough.

“Q: How many relational aestheticists does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: One, but she gets a member of the public to do it for her.”

By 8pm the group dispersed, and most headed over to Stride for dual openings: Karilynn Ming Ho‘s WHERE WHERE THERE THERE in the Project Space, and Brian Batista‘s colourful “3D” paintings of Hindu deities upstairs.

Gamal Abdel Nasser & Josip Broz Tito at the University of Calgary

Dictators and good friends Gamal Abdel Nasser and Josip Broz Tito, both previously believed to be dead, have been meeting in Calgary since Wednesday.

The week’s first meeting took place on 1st St. SW, near 9th Ave. SW. Nasser and Tito stood together on a red carpet and greeted each other in an extended salute.

On Thursday they ventured to the University of Calgary. There they sewed themselves together with red string and gave a lecture on their work with the Non-Aligned Movement.

On Friday, the clever pair decided to dodge the crowds and meet an hour earlier than had previously been scheduled. By the time fans arrived to witness the historic occasion at Calgary City Hall, Nasser and Tito were finished and had slipped away. Discussions were said to have revolved around the weather and, specifically, snowballs.

The pair was seen attending various cultural events together when not engaged in diplomatic functions.

On Wednesday evening at John Snow House, Andy Paterson gave a performative lecture on the history and archives of The New Gallery. It was well-attended by both artists and fans of local history, including ACAD instructor Shelley Ouellet and newly-arrived festival artists Nahed Mansour and Bojana Videkanic.

After the lecture, several artists stuck around drinking beer and discussing the festival. including Artistic Director Tomas Jonsson (who sat across from Paterson, giggling conspiratorially), New Gallery Administrative Director Su Strang, and JSH Director Kaylin Pearce.

After holding forth about the work of John Greyson and his fascination with squirrels, Andy listed a few of the videos his white lab coat had been featured in, including works by Greyson, Keith Cole, and a protest by AIDS Action Now.
