My project Cooler was accepted by Visualeyez, so in September I’ll be heading to Edmonton to get some sweet, sweet dirt on the artists (& Latitude staff).
Cooler explores the roles that storytelling and gossip play in building spaces for community. Stationed in the gallery near the ubiquitous site of workplace gossip – the water cooler – Megan will develop a series of timely, potentially embellished stories about her experiences at Visualeyez. Artists, organizers and festivalgoers will be treated like celebrities; their stories, both titillating and mundane, made an object of fascination. She’ll leave reviews to the critics, emphasizing happenings outside/after/in the bushes behind the performance. Cooler quenches public thirst for gossip and makes both audience and artists feel like one of the ‘it’ crowd.
Visit Cooler on the web at artgossip.ca (but not until September).
Two Nice Things
0 Comments Published October 13th, 2008 in Art Gossip from Elsewhere, Wicked Awesome.M:ST has a blog (which weirdly isn’t linked from their very nice new website). Have I ever mentioned how much I love festival/conference blogging?
Everyone is talking about the Cedar Tavern Singers. I went to their website and listened to some of their songs, and was instantly oversome with fluttery fannish devotion.

The Ethics of Helping
0 Comments Published February 23rd, 2008 in Art Gossip from Elsewhere, Helping Services, What's goin' on?.Since I started my new job, I’ve often been reminded of The Ethics of Helping, a set of guidelines for best helping practices in a peer environment. I used to teach them to new volunteers, because they’re really important and I do take them really seriously. But also I’m totally fascinated by them in [...]
I love it when Lee Henderson posts about relational aesthetics/socially-engaged art/community art. This time he talks about the criteria one might use to critique these projects. I’m kind of iffy about even posting about it, appropriately enough. It’s a super-bad problem whenever you feel like you can’t respond critically to something, and that’s what [...]

Joanne Bristol & Paul Petro
0 Comments Published December 10th, 2007 in Art, Art Gossip from Elsewhere, Needlepoints & Yarn.Joanne Bristol. I think it’s from a photo from Venice, in a boat. This may be my new favourite; the green yarn is puffy and gives it a curly, fluffy look
Aside: I love photos from Venice — eventually I want to do a series of small portraits in sets: artists who have represented [...]
Visual Arts Summit
0 Comments Published December 7th, 2007 in Art Gossip from Elsewhere, What's goin' on?.If, like me, you are curious about what happened at the Visual Arts Summit*, you can read YYZBooks’ blogging about it on Reading Art. I’m kind of interested in pictures from the Summit; I should go looking for some to pillage.
I got super-fabulous art news the other day…which is, for now, a [...]
