On Thursday, at the University of Calgary’s Nickle Gallery, artists who have who have dressed in men’s clothing for during their performances discussed their practices’ relationships with gender and masculinity. Interestingly, all panelists were women: Pauline Cummins, Kay Burns, Wednesday Lupypciw, Nahed Mansour, and Bojana Videkanic. The panel was moderated by Karilynn Ming Ho, whose exhibition WHERE WHERE THERE THERE opens at Stride Gallery on October 26.

Burns vs. Paterson: Who wore their coat best?

As Iris Taylor, the Archivist’s Assistant, Kay Burns wore a stylish fitted lab coat with matching reading glasses and white cotton gloves.

For his performative lecture on October 24 at John Snow House, Andy Paterson sported a boxy style with a patch that read “Parkview Respiratory Care”, along with a blue checked dress shirt and dapper bow tie.

Well, Hello Calgary

I arrived in Calgary at 9pm, in just enough time to slide into Kay Burns‘ opening at The New Gallery. Despite being completely free of staff, who were presumably–like most arts workers in Canada–at PAARC’s Institutions by Artists conference in Vancouver, there was a steady stream in and out of Burns’ exhibition. I had good chats with artists Wednesday Lupypciw, and flirty ex-Calgarian Concordia prof Peter Flemming.

At 9:30 I received a text from Mountain Standard Time’s Artistic Director Tomas Jonsson, requesting my presence at an event in some shipping containers near the river.

“Just follow Stephens Ave. east until you get to a sketchy neighbourhood; look for the lights and thumpy dance music.”

I eventually found my way to ContainR Calgary, a temporary outdoor art/party space built from repurposed shipping containers. One of the dozens of performers was M:ST artist Allison Cummings, performing her silent and intimate work Burden with a non-stop flow of arts-curious businesspeople. You can catch Burden again at the Epcor Centre on Monday afternoon.

The ContainRs will be the site of several other parties and events during M:ST. Their bare metal seems to amplify the cold; I’d recommend dressing for warmth (in addition to fashion).
