However, those for whom the craving for performance art is only satisfied by the wettest, messiest acts were surely set aquiver by Les Fermières Obsédées‘ orgiastic spectacle. The artists finished their filthy, filthy performance covered with cola, chocolate sauce and other unmentionables cannibalized from a doll that they alternately beat and ate. Plus, they gave out candy!

Johanna Householder stopped by John Snow House to chat with Andy Paterson (in residence while developing a performance based on JSH’s extensive archival holdings), John Snow House Director Kaylin Pearce, and I. People fawned over Toronto performance festival 7a*11d‘s promotional material designed by Zab Hobart, and gossiped about previous JSH residents LIDS (Anthea Black, Nicole Burish and Wednesday Lupypciw).

During his performance at the Oly Y Centre on Wednesday evening, Randy Gledhill promised attendees at Sunday’s Performance Cabaret at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery a story about the time he got picked up by the Hell’s Angels. It’s sure to be a fabulous time, and the audience would be well-advised to keep an eye out for flying objects.

“He’s helping me fulfill all my fantasies!” gushed Terrance Houle, of being asked to assist in Gledhill’s performance by donning a white cowboy hat and shouting slurs out of the back of a pickup truck. Watch for more on Wednesday’s performances coming soon.

I started to get excited for W.O.R.K.S. Among the Easels when I overheard Clive Robertson talk about guitar smashing.

“It takes 8 minutes. It always smashes the exact same way.”

Volunteers and artists who arrived at Royal Canadian Legion early had plenty of time to speculate on the future of the musical instruments, beer bottles, and other objects laid out neatly inside a grid of green painter’s tape on the floor.

Original W.O.R.K.S. members Robertson and Paul Woodrow, along with collaborators Johanna Householder, Matt Rogalsky and Terrance Houle, recreated a selection of infamous and playful performances from the 1960s and 70s, both their own and other artists’, and performed several new works.

The evening began with two shoe-related pieces. First, audience members were invited onstage to talk about their shoes. In Captive Audience, artists collected the audience’s shoes and arranged them on stage, so if anyone wanted to leave, they’d have to enter the performance space to publicly retrieve them. Artist Randy Gledhill, Executive Director and Curator of Vancouver’s LIVE Performance Biennale (catch him Wednesday night at the Old Y), refused to relinquish his shoes, and was nearly pulled onto the floor when Robertson yanked them off his feet.

During her reenactment of A Party, Householder crushed All Dressed flavour Ruffles with the heel of her black pump. We learned at the beginning of the evening she calls these her “Maybe Shoes”, and has performed in them regularly since her work with The Clichettes in the 1980s.

When Houle took the stage with a big drum and Dan Wilson on electric guitar, ACAD Professor Rita McKeough began to stuff bits of tissue in her ears in anticipation of extreme volume–which Houle delivered, as he drummed and sang traditional songs arranged as metal.

The evening’s finale was a reenactment of Robin Page’s classic interactive work Kicking a Guitar Around the Block. After Robertson noodled a toy electric guitar, a didactic black and white video explained what would happen. After distributing plastic bags to collect the guitar’s bits and splinters, Robertson coaxed the crowd out the Legion’s back door. To everyone’s surprise, the guitar only made it 100 feet down the sidewalk before an over-enthusiastic kick launched it onto some nearby hoarding, attracting the concerned attention of several construction workers. The full garbage bags were then taken inside and the pieces arranged in a neat line on the floor.

After what sources say was quite a long Sunday night at John Snow House, artist Allison Cummings started hopping into the arms of both friends and complete strangers, apparently expecting to be carried. One might assume that she was either exhausted from her long performance, or full and sleepy from a big meal of rice paper and chili sauce.

Although Cummings is small and light, inevitably she would become too heavy and need to be let down. After lying on the floor briefly, Cummings would get back up and just stand there, quietly waiting to be fed and picked up again. This continued in the lobby of the Epcor Centre for about four hours on Monday afternoon.

After Allison Cummings’ performance at Epcor, artists gathered at the Old Y Centre, site of M:ST’s office. Eventually the conversation turned to wine, and the group left for a drink next door at Hop In Brew Pub.

Johanna Householder, Chumpon Apisuk, Randy Gledhill, and Allison Cummings launched into a discussion of Thai art politics, which soon turned into enthusiastic stories of drinking customs at the international festivals each had performed at. Drinking an Aprikat, the animated Gledhill recalled an anecdote about skyping with a “festive” Vasan Sitthiket at 4am Bangkok time.

Later, the group was joined by Terrance Houle, Dan Wilson, festival Artistic Director Tomas Jonsson, and, briefly, trans musician/heartthrob Rae Spoon, in town filming an NFB documentary.
